Standard travel insurance usually will not cover you above a certain altitude, and it will not cover helicopter evacuation — which, at Base Camp elevation, is often the only way out in an emergency. You need a policy that explicitly covers high-altitude trekking (typically to 6,000 m+) and emergency helicopter evacuation.
What to check before you buy
- Altitude limit covers your trek's highest point (Kala Patthar is ~5,644 m)
- Helicopter evacuation is included, not just "medical transport"
- Trip cancellation/interruption for weather-related delays
- Gear coverage if you're renting or bringing high-value equipment
